Today I showed them an article about how a man can now walk due to a transplant of cells from the nose to the spine.

A new chapter will begin tomorrow. Today our Test was a real-life example of charting data. Everyone went to a different class and registered data and made a Tally Chart, Picto Graph, & Bar Graph.
We will now start the beginning stages of Multiplication. :) -Mr. Spencer This week is our "Red Ribbon Week". Valley Academy is dedicating this week to teach about drug prevention & healthy choices.
You will notice that each of your children have a red ribbon on their wrist. Every day this week, a number will be drawn, and if it matches the red ribbon on your student's wrist, they will get a prize. Please allow them to keep these on for the entire week. :) Also I have sent home 2 bookmarks and a comic about saying no to drugs and alcohol. I hope your children enjoy. This is a great time to talk about "Saying No" at home as well as school. This Friday we may be able to wear Jeans and a red shirt, depending on how the entire student body behaves throughout the week. I will keep you posted. -Mr. Spencer This helps children embrace the joy of reading, by realizing books do not need pictures to take us to a magical place.
Due to the fact that we only have three days of school this week, there will be no spelling test. I will be handing back words that students need to re-write from last week's test, but that will be all we do for spelling. Next Monday spelling will continue on with our normal schedule for list #9.
We have started to watch 'Spookly the Square Pumpkin' as part of my anti-bullying lessons. We watch about 15 minutes a day, and throughout our viewing we discuss the messages the movie depicts. Thus far your children have been great at discussing their views and feelings. This type of open dialog is crucial to help each child build their own opinions and improve their ability to appreciate others'.
We have been having great success in Math IXL lately. With our new chapter covering data and chats, the class is focusing on Section P (Data & Graphs).
Within that section the students have learned about bar graphs, pictographs, tally charts. & tables. Feel free to have them work on: P.4, P.5, & P.9 They may also go back and master addition (Sec C), subtraction (Sec D), place value (Sec B), numbers & comparing (Sec A), time (Sec O), money (Sec N), estimating & rounding (Sec L), and even work on multiplication skill builders (Sec F) Last year I had my class use an online reading log. However due to several problems I had with some students' honesty with reading as well as some other distractions with the site. It is a fantastic online source for tracking reading, if only it would allow me to tweak areas of concern.
With that being said, for 'Book-It' rewards from Pizza Hut & tracking part of each child's reading grade, we will be using a hard copy reading tracker. I have kept track of in-class reading thus far, but now will expect the reading to take place at home. I understand the hectic life many of us have, so I have tweaked expectations. Each month, for full points, Every student needs to read 15 days a month for 30 minutes. When this is complete, the child may turn in the paper for their grade and a Book-It prize. For this month, feel free to backlog any reading done for October. Your children are wonderful. Thank you for allowing me to teach such precious 3rd graders. -Mr. Spencer Every Thursday we read to Karen Jane's Kindergarten class. I am so proud of my class! This has helped excite young new readers, thanks to your children.
